1 How does this work?
For some children, transport to school is complicated. This could be because they have a disability or attend a special school that is far away from them. If these children live in the City of Amsterdam, they may be eligible for the municipality's ‘student transport funding' scheme. Parents or guardians must apply for student transport themselves.
2 Different types of student transport
Student transport involves 3 different forms of transport:
Public transport
First, we will see if your child can travel to school by public transport. If so, you will receive financial compensation or a public transport card for your child.
Can your child travel by public transport under supervision only? Then the travel expenses of the accompanying person (parent/guardian) will also be reimbursed.
Private transport
Parents or guardians can also receive financial compensation for their private transport. This means they take care of bringing and picking up their child themselves.
Specialised transport
Specialised transport is door-to-door transport by van from home to school and back. This is for children who cannot travel to school by any other means.
3 Conditions
Your child may be eligible for reimbursement for public transport, private transport or specialised transport to school. Whether your child is eligible for one of the forms of student transport depends on the following points:
- Distance between home and nearest appropriate school
- Travel time by public transport
- Age
- Disability (physical, mental, psychological and/or sensory)
- School type (SPE, SE, SSE)
4 How do I get reimbursed?
Applying for reimbursement can be done both online and by post through the City of Amsterdam. In both cases, you make the application together with the school your child attends.
