How does it work?

Childcare, what options are there and what should you consider? Here you will find information on the different types of childcare. From nurseries with pre-school to after-school care.

  2. Nursery and pre-school

Children aged 6 weeks to 4 years can attend a nursery. Most nurseries are open from 8.00 to 18.00 and offer full-day care. Some have longer opening hours and the option of half-day care or 24-hour care.

    Pre-school

Some nurseries have a special programme for children aged between 2 and 4 where they learn through play. This pre-school programme prepares children for primary school so that they get a good start. Children do language games, they draw, sing, move and read aloud. They learn to make friends and play together. Pre-school is for all toddlers aged 2 to 4.

A nursery with a pre-school programme collaborates with a primary school. The pre-school programme and method is in line with the method in grades 1 and 2. This will make the transition to primary school easier for your child.

  3. After-school care

If your child attends primary school, you can make use of after-school care. Before and/or after school, children are looked after. Childcare is also available during school holidays. Schools are obliged to offer after-school care. In most cases, they have this organised by after-school organisations.

    Lunchtime supervision

Almost all schools allow children to stay over at lunchtime. The school board is responsible for this. Together with the parents, the school decides how this is organised. This is done through the participation council. You can get more information through your school.
