Secondary education for newcomers

Are you new to the Netherlands? If so, register your child at a school as soon as possible. If your child is between 12 and 17 years old, your child may attend secondary school. The steps to register your child at a school can be found below. 

Your child may attend primary school when they are between 4 and 12 years old. Here you can read how to register your child for primary education.

  1. Start

    Does your child speak the Dutch language? Then your child can attend regular secondary school. Here are the schools you can choose from. 

    Does your child speak little to no Dutch? If so, you can register your child for an international transition class. In the international transition class, there is a lot of focus on Dutch as a second language. Other subjects such as math and English are also offered.

    Er zijn 4 scholen in het voortgezet onderwijs met een internationale schakelklas. Meld uw kind zo snel mogelijk aan bij één van deze scholen:

  3. Intake

    After registration, you will receive an invitation from the school for an intake interview.

  4. To school

    After the intake interview, your child can start in the international transition class on the agreed date.

  5. Transition

    Your child will spend about 1 to 2 years in an international transition class. After that year, the school will review with you and your child what is appropriate further education.
